How do you calculate a drip rate?

Drops per minute = fluid rate (mL/hr) × drip set (gtt/mL) ÷ 60. For example, 100 mL/hr on a 20 gtt/mL macrodrip set is 100 × 20 ÷ 60 ≈ 33 drops per minute — about 1 drop every 2 seconds. If you only know the total volume, divide it by the infusion time in hours first to get the rate.

What drip sets do veterinary clinics use?

Standard macrodrip sets deliver 10, 15, or 20 drops per mL. Microdrip (pediatric) sets deliver 60 drops per mL — with a 60 gtt/mL set, the drops per minute equal the rate in mL/hr exactly, which makes small-patient rates much easier to count.

Why count drops instead of using a pump?

Infusion pumps are ideal, but gravity sets are still everywhere — in the field, in overflow wards, and as backup. Counting drops against your watch remains the fastest way to verify any fluid line, pump or not.
